A Lifeline for Survivorship: How Penn’s Care Team Helped Him Thrive After Treatment

“Penn’s neuropsych and psychosocial team have been so crucial in helping Penn both during treatment and after treatment. They’ve helped me, his teachers and his school understand how we can best help him succeed. The biggest thing that has helped me is the neuropsych report that they created for Penn with details about how he currently functions and what he struggles with. They encouraged me to remind his teachers and school that Penn has the ability to excel in school, but due to issues from treatment, it might just take him longer to get there than typical students. It’s something we bring up at every 504 meeting with the school. The full report that the psychosocial team provided us really helps his teachers understand where he’s coming from and how to best help him. The fact that we were able to have all of this done within the CBCC with a doctor who works directly with the CBCC oncologists and the CBCC school liaison was beyond helpful.

"Having these providers who can provide psychosocial care through the lens of cancer survivorship is just so invaluable to us."

At Penn’s first survivorship appointment, Penn mentioned to them that he still struggles a lot with memory. The psychosocial team was able to immediately provide him with ways to cope with that and a whole packet of tips and exercises to work on to take home with him. Having these providers who can provide this psychosocial care through the lens of cancer survivorship is just so invaluable to us.”
